II. History & Tradition

a) Inception and Chartering of the Servitors of Lothar - Founded by Maikel Garravore with the aid of Philomene Declan (Asteris), Boban the Smelly, and Fayeth Tanner. The Servitors were officially formed on 10 July in the 32nd year following the Opening of the Dark Portal, during the reign of King Varian Wrynn.

b) On Anduin Lothar - The foundation of the unit rests upon the shoulders of the martyred human general Anduin Lothar, the Lion of Azeroth. A member of the Brotherhood of the Horse and once-Regent Lord of Azeroth, Lothar was the last true descendant of the ancient Arathi bloodline. He is placed as a symbol and an example for the Servitors of what a true servant to the people must be.

For more information regarding Anduin Lothar, see Addendum 2-B.

c) Strength, Courage, and Compassion - The Servitors' Motto was developed in order to unite the unit's various members under one creed. Each of the three characteristics holds a purpose for the Servitors:

1. Strength - The Servitor is expected to be strong not only physically but mentally. The Servitor relies on their swordbrethren in the field; one weak link on the chain may cause all the others to fail.

2. Courage - The Servitor is expected to carry Courage in their heart. To face the countless perils of our time the Servitor must be willing to stand firm in the face of whatever may be set before them. The Servitor is to be the sword and shield of the people, as Lothar was; without Courage this is impossible.

3. Compassion - The Servitor is expected to demonstrate Compassion. The Servitor fights for the defense and freedom of the Alliance and for the sakes of countless others unable to defend themselves. A Servitor lacking Compassion for those who rely upon the order for their protection will certainly fail.

d) The Servitors' Colors - The crimson and gold hold a special significance to the Servitors. The crimson represents the blood of sacrifice; the glimmering gold represents the color of loyalty and purity of purpose. The order's tabard is comprised of the golden lion's head of Lothar facing forward upon a crimson field.

e) Notable Accomplishments and Commendations:

Success on the field of battle during hostilities at the Isle of Conquest. (Meritorious Unit Citation awarded.)

Notable action at the Battle of the Wrathgate. (Joint Meritorious Unit Award awarded.)

Strong presence on the field during the Battles for the Shadow Vault, Broken Front, Blackwatch, and Skybreaker.

Defense of Stormwind and Ironforge during the Shattering.

Success against the elemental firelord Sorangar during the Fourth Battle Beneath the Blackrock. (Valorous Unit Commendation awarded.)

Exceptional meritorious and heroic conduct while in direct support of military operations in the Twilight Highlands Area of Operations during the War of the Shattering. (Meritorious Unit Citation awarded.)

Meritorious conduct during the Operation: Shieldwall initiatives in Krasarang.

Assisted the Siege of Orgrimmar in a support role with artillery, supply gathering, and external defense.

Defeated the Unnamed, an ancient entity who wished to enslave and draw power from all souls of the dead.

Assisted in the defense of Greenwarden’s Grove in the Wetlands during the Legion invasion.

Defeated a fel reaver during the Battle of Thandol Span during the Legion invasion.

Broke the Legion siege on Aerie Peak.

Prevented a fel reaver from marching on Deliverance Point on the Broken Shore at great personal cost.

Served heroically during the Argus campaign, including aiding in the defense of the breach into Antorus.

Participated in the rescue of kaldorei citizens during the burning of Teldrassil.

Assisted the Alliance army and eliminated a large Forsaken encampment during the Siege of Lordaeron.

f) Change-of-Command - Originally commanded by the kaldorei death knight Maikel Garravore, the position was granted freely and willing to the human priestess Philomene Asteris. Under her leadership was appointed previous Academe-Cleric Jocastia Silverwright, Guard-Marshal Coehen Nash, and Enclave-Knight Ser Edgthorn Asteris to their respective roles as acting Academe Advisor, Guard Advisor, and Enclave Advisor. These three replaced the former Advisors Philomene Asteris (Academe) and Filigon Swifttalon (Enclave). This change-of-command took place a year and a half after the unit was formed, near the time of the Shattering.

Five years after the founding of the unit, Lady Marshal Asteris was called to lead the First Caerdun Regiment. Academe-Advisor Prikka Graymind was named her successor.  A year later, Commander Graymind appointed Guard-Advisor Etharion Longsight to succeed her.

During Commander Longsight’s leadership, he and his Advisors chose to add a third division, the Scouts, to the unit, to cover tactical and stealth combat. When Commander Longsight retired, he was succeeded by the three division then-Advisors: Academe-Commander Roiya Shadowpaw, Guard-Commander Brommidor Stonebrow, and Scout-Commander M. Mindspanner.

Two years later, Jocastia Silverwright was appointed to be Academe-Commander Shadowpaw's replacement. Shortly thereafter, the Academe division was renamed to Spellweavers.

g) Headquarters Change - Another change which came about after the Shattering was the change in the location of Servitors Headquarters. Formerly occupying the small island of Fray just off the coast of the Barrens and south of the port of Ratchet, this base was abandoned by the Servitors shortly after the Shattering when it was discovered that during the defense of Alliance capitals, pirates had usurped the former base. This led the Servitors to seek a new base with the Wildhammer Clan of dwarves in Aerie Peak. There they make their home and headquarters to this day and are graciously allowed to do so by the resident Wildhammers.

III. Organization

The Servitor is expected to be aware of the chain of command. Upon joining the order the Servitor is assigned to one of three divisions: Guard, Academe, or Scouts. Sometimes, this assignment is temporary to determine how best to utilize the Servitor’s skillset, as some of the divisions have an amount of overlap.

a) The Guard - The Servitor assigned to this division will be expected to either possess or obtain proficiency in melee combat, without exception. The Servitor will frequently be a follower of the warrior's path and be regarded as a front line fighter.

b) The Spellweavers - The Servitor assigned to this division will be expected to either possess or obtain proficiency in magical combat, without exception. This is the division for casters, regardless of what school of magic they use.

c) The Scouts - The Servitor assigned to this division will be expected to either possess or obtain proficiency in stealth, infiltration, surveillance, intelligence gathering, utility, and either ranged or stealth combat.

Historically a different third division existed. Its purpose was as follows:

The Enclave - The Servitor assigned to this division was expected to either possess or obtain proficiency in the druidic or shaman arts, without exception. The Servitor was expected to strive to heal Azeroth.

The Servitor is expected to look first to their Advisor and then to their division Commander in matters professional. Following the chain of command properly means the Servitor attempts to resolve conflict at the lowest level possible before making entreaties to upper leadership.

For more information on conflict resolution, see Section V, subsection d.

IV. Rank & Advancement

The Servitor who wishes to advance within this order would do well to understand that promotions are to be sought proactively. The Servitor who does not seek advancement is not to be scorned; not all are fit for increased responsibility, nor up to the rigors of testing.

The Servitor is expected to formally address their division Commander when they feel they are prepared to be tested; doing so via letter of intent is acceptable. After the Servitor declares their intention to strike for rank their division Commander will craft a task commensurate with the rank desired and the skills of the Servitor in question, provided that all criteria for advancement have been met. Once any and all tasks are completed to the satisfaction of the reviewing Commander, the Servitor is to be advanced to this rank at the next meet, or in rare cases, in the field.

a) Prerequisites - Promotion requirements are as follows:

• Initiate: In order to be eligible to advance from the rank of Applicant to the rank of Initiate, the Servitor must have completed a one-month trial. The Servitor must also have aided in the preparation of and participated in the execution of one or more missions. Finally, the Servitor must demonstrate a working knowledge of rank, military bearing, their swordbrethren, and the Handbook. Any Applicant who fails to fulfill the requirements for Initiate in a timely manner may be dismissed.

• Soldier/Warden/Sentinel: In order to be eligible to advance from the rank of Initiate to the rank of Soldier/Warden/Sentinel, the Servitor must have assisted with planning at least one combat or non-combat action. Additionally, the Servitor must have continued to serve effectively in the field. Finally, the Servitor must have served with the Servitors of Lothar for at least four months and will be required to complete a task assigned by their Commander.

• Sergeant: In order to be eligible to advance from the rank of Soldier/Warden/Sentinel to the rank of Sergeant, the Servitor must have demonstrated significant leadership both on and off the field. The Servitor must actively give feedback to division leadership and aid lower-enlisted swordbrethren via assigned mentorship. The Servitor must have planned and executed a series of combat missions or investigations with no less than three individual combat engagements. The Servitor must have served with the Servitors of Lothar for one calendar year and must also complete a task as assigned by their division Commander.

Honorably discharged personnel with an especially outstanding record may be awarded the rank of Reservist. This is a privilege given only at command discretion. ((This rank largely serves as the holding rank for Servitors who will be taking an extended leave of absence from the game OOCly.))

b) Collateral Duties - If a Servitor finds themselves looked to by the guild to fill a specific role repeatedly, they may speak with an officer to determine if this role could be given an official recognition. For example, if a Servitor has been sought out for counseling and spiritual aid by numerous swordbrethren and has freely provided this service, the Servitor may wish to be considered for a Chaplain’s position.

Collateral duties include:

Chief Engineer - The order's Chief Engineer is expected to be capable of knowledgeable oversight of all things related to engineering and technological developments required by the order. Requirements are a Grand Master Engineer's rank and an adaptable and innovative mind.

Chief Artificer - A Chief Artificer is expected to have expertise in jewelcrafting and more specifically in crystal technology as developed by the draenei and the ability to use this knowledge of the craft to aid the order both on and off the field of combat.

V. Military Bearing

The motto of this order is 'Strength, Courage, Compassion'. It is expected that the Servitor be mindful of this in all professional interactions. The Servitor should set an example of high personal and military ideals and strive to put the good of the order and the Alliance before personal preference as well as obey the rules of military courtesy and etiquette.

The Servitor is expected to exhibit proper bearing. This is defined as 'the state of order and obedience, characterized by the prompt and willing responsiveness to orders and compliance to regulation.'

a) The Salute - One of the most important of courtesies is the salute. It is a respectful greeting, a sign of recognition and respect between swordbrethren. The Servitor is required to salute all commissioned officers when in uniform, ie: wearing their officer tabard. The salute should be smart and snappy. A half-hearted, sloppy salute gives the Servitor away as a raw recruit and demonstrates a lack of attention to detail.

A hand salute is to be rendered when both parties are in uniform and are not currently engaged in a combat action. Saluting during fieldwork is an efficient way of informing enemy snipers who to kill first and is therefore to be avoided. A hand salute can be foregone in favor of a verbal greeting at all other times, including when injuries prevent a proper salute or when carried objects prevent a proper salute.

b) Basic Drill Commands - The Servitor is encouraged to learn the following common commands and their proper responses:

“Fall IN” - Form ranks standing at the position of attention until given further orders.

“AttenTION” - The position of attention is the basic military position. It indicates the Servitor is alert and ready for instruction. Individuals snap to the position in which they are standing straight, looking forward, and not moving. No talking unless spoken to.

"Parade REST" - Individuals spread their feet about 12 inches while bringing both of their arms behind their back interlocking their hands. The back of the left hand rests against the back. The back of the right hand rests on the palm of the left, with the left thumb locked over the right hand and the right thumb locked over the left thumb. No talking unless spoken to.

"At EASE" - Individuals are permitted light movement given their right foot does not leave the ground; no talking unless spoken to.

"REST" - Individuals are permitted light movement and may also engage in quiet conversation as long as their right leg is planted on the ground.

Preparatory commands are listed here normally, with the execution command listed in capital letters.

c) Rule of Six - The Servitor is expected to express compliance with this directive, a copy of which is posted on the notice board. The Servitor who does not acknowledge their acceptance of this directive cannot expect to attain full membership in the order.

For more information regarding the Rule of Six, see Addendum 5-A.

b) Uniforms - The Servitor represents not only the order, but the Alliance. People form their opinions of the order based on the Servitor's appearance and actions. The Servitor will always wear their uniform with pride and conduct themself in a manner that will reflect credit on both them and the order.

Any working robes, armor, or other uniform item shall be kept in good order, with worn items mended or replaced as required. Boots shall be kept polished when in garrison. Weapons are to be well-maintained. The Servitor is to consider all appropriate spell reagents as part of their uniform.

1. Tabards shall be worn by ranks Initiate and higher. The standard tabard can be obtained from the Quartermaster of the order. The presence of gold piping is used to indicate a Servitor who has attained the rank of Sergeant. The presence of prescribed gold embroidery is used to indicate a Servitor who has attained at least the rank of Advisor.

2. Signets shall be worn only by the Commanders and Advisors; they are used to seal all official documents. The Servitor found in possession of one of the order's signets without express permission will be immediately discharged from service.

3. Aiguillettes come in two colors. The gold aiguillette is considered part of the uniform for all Advisors and Commanders. The crimson aiguillette is considered part of the uniform for all Servitors who currently perform a collateral duty for the order.

For more information regarding collateral duties, see Section IV, subsection c

4. Medals and campaign ribbons are to be worn only in the most formal of circumstances, e.g., a ball, wedding, military function, or funeral. Battle service medals are to be worn in order of oldest to most recent and have priority, then follows campaign ribbons in order of oldest to most recent, then follows commendations. Commendation priority is as follows: Prisoner of War, Lifesaving Medal, Soldier’s Medal, The Red Lion. All medals are to be polished and worn on the left breast in straight rows.

For more information regarding the medals, see Addendum 5-B.3.

d) Conflict Resolution - Dueling is permitted where mediation has failed, so long as it does not extend beyond first blood. The Servitor found disobeying this is effectively hindering the combat readiness of the order and shall be dealt with accordingly.

VI. Disciplinary Measures

There are circumstances which arise that will require the intervention of senior enlisted or officer personnel. The Servitor is encouraged to seek close personal bonds with their swordbrethren, but conflicts will occasionally occur, and sometimes will result in disobedience or -- in the heat of the moment -- failure to carry out orders. Common responses are as follows:

a) Failure in Military Bearing, Minor - This includes unprofessional behavior during the course of official duties which does not compromise mission objectives, as well as failure to follow proper protocol. The Servitor will be informally counseled to correct the deficiency, and in cases of repeated transgression will be directed to perform some task, frequently menial and often an annoyance.

b) Failure in Military Bearing, Major - This includes unprofessional behavior such as being slow to complete or failing to complete assigned duties, resulting in either partial or full compromise of mission objectives. The Servitor will likely be corrected on the spot as well as be assigned a task tailored to educate them on proper behavior as well as outline the cost of their failure in terms of the order.

c) Failure to Follow a Direct Order - This includes both major and minor offenses, as in the terms of discipline all are equally serious transgressions. Laxity in the minor aspects leads to laxity in the major aspects. The Servitor will be assigned a large task, to be completed only in their free time, and will also be directed to their Advisor or Commander for formal counseling. Repeated offenses will result in demotion or even discharge from service.

Less-common responses are covered in the following manner:

d) Failure in Servitorship - This includes all major offenses which cause grievous harm to a swordbrother or result in complete and utter breakdown of discipline. Thievery, assault, treason, attempted (or successful) murder, and any other matter which will compromise the effectiveness of the order are included. The Servitor will be called to Courts-Martial proceedings. Depending on the outcome, the Servitor could reasonably expect demotion, discharge from service, and/or prosecution for crimes against the Alliance.

It is to be noted that proceedings this weighty are only to be pursued with serious consideration. If the Servitor comes across information indicating a Failure in Servitorship, the Servitor is encouraged to seek guidance from their division leadership immediately.

VII. Life On Base

The current home for the Servitors of Lothar is Aerie Peak, the Hinterlands. There are four main buildings at the Peak, each one with its own specific functions.

a) Wildhammer Keep - Serves as barracks, mess, and mechanized weaponry storage. The heavy siege doors are only opened in time of greatest need; otherwise traffic is funneled through the single front entry and down two hallways to the wings. Below the fortress itself is a Wildhammer city where most of the local dwarves live.

Features - On ground level is the mess hall; the opposite wing houses an aleroom which is run by Truk Wildbeard. Between the two wings is a tank bay which also holds several flying machines. The Scout-Commander’s office is off the tank bay to the right, while the Academe-Commander’s is to the left. The second floor houses the barracks and extra engineering spaces (which open to the hanger bay) as well as the Advisors’ office/records room. On the third floor is the infirmary and library. The below ground level is one large informal meeting hall. Scattered throughout the keep are various storage rooms with arms and armor staged in case of an attack.

Other Information - Though many Servitors choose to stay at the Keep not longer than overnight, the keep is stocked well enough that many (if not all) of the Servitors as well as those Wildhammers that live at the Peak would be comfortable for at least a few months without needing supplies.

b) The Guard Tower - Serves as a lookout post. The requisitions office is also located in this building.

Features - The first floor of the building is made of a small open lounge and requisitions office. The second contains more working spaces as well as some general seating. The third consists only of a ledge overlooking the other two floors, and acts as a lookout tower. It is complete with gun mounts and commands a view of not only the entrance to the Keep but the surrounding environment.

Other Information - Typically gear and items needed by the Servitor are stored in the rooms beneath the tower itself, of which only the order's officers possess unlimited access. This building contains munitions caches as well, secreted around the floors.

c) The Forge - Serves as a working space for the crafting of arms and armor. The outer ring doubles as a gathering area for the order, especially in the chill winter months. The forge also serves as the Guard-Commander’s office.

Features - This building is only one story and is partially built into the mountainside; the entire structure is centered around a smithy. Around the forge itself sit anvils and other necessary tools such as molds, tongs, and forms.

Other Information - Most promotions and official passdown ceremonies occur here; the Servitor summoned to these proceedings is always expected to be in uniform. The forge is a visible reminder of the heat and toil which go into the forging of the bonds between swordbrethren.

d) The Aerie - Serves as both a roost for local- and privately-owned gryphons; also houses crafters' spaces.

Features - The Aerie itself is the tallest building on the premises. The gryphons are able to roost and sleep inside the gryphon statue where they are also bred and born. A Gryphon Master is on hand in order to lend commissioned gryphons to fly a person from place to place. Beneath the winding stairs to the Keep proper are two large alcoves. The one closest to the forge (relatively) houses an Alchemy workshop, herb racks, and a small tannery. The opposite alcove houses a rack for drying, smoking, and salting meats of all kinds in addition to a greatloom.

Other Information - There remains ample space available for the Servitor who wishes to pursue other crafts, and use of already present equipment is considered acceptable usage of the order's resources.

For more information regarding safehouses, see Addendum 6-A.

VIII. Communication

The Servitor is given multiple methods of organizing and coordinating their activities and will always be encouraged to take full advantage of these avenues of communication. Ideally the Servitor will, through these channels, not only function efficiently in the field, but remain accountable to the chain-of-command without difficulty.

a) Signs and Signals - The fingertalk was developed in the early days of the order as a way for the Servitor to communicate silently. Once based loosely on thieves' sign and basic military hand gestures, the fingertalk has over the years evolved into a rich if wordless language. The Servitor is required to gain at least minimal proficiency in the fingertalk within the first month of joining the order; to this end they can always find extra copies of the manual in the barracks. Many a Servitor has gotten to know their swordbrethren through the simple exercise of practicing the gestures with a partner. It takes roughly one week’s study to begin gaining mastery over our sign language. ((One week after joining, an Applicant can /join fingertalk, which is the channel for sign language.))

b) Mark IV Communicator - The Servitor is expected to keep their Mark IV Communicator, colloquially called a ‘COMM,’ on or near their person at all times. Replacements can be obtained through the Quartermaster for any lost or damaged. The COMM is not to be surrendered to those outside the order save in cases of emergency. Customized versions are available by requisitioning the Chief Engineer; in some cases a Servitor chooses to have this functionality integrated into a bracelet or necklace. Collar-mounted versions and versions with Cobalt Fang technology are also available.

Additionally, all COMMs come with Gnomish Morsh Code capabilities. When silence is required, Morsh can be used to pass pertinent information (provided those on the other end can transcribe and decode transmissions). ((To use Morsh ICly, use <m> or [m] before typing in /g, so that we know it’s a Morsh Code transmission instead of speech.))

There are text functions that display on the COMM’s screen, in case Morsh is unavailable. These are not to be used for social interactions and are instead only for the most dire of circumstances. The photography function is not to be used for social interactions either.

The Servitor is encouraged to practice proper discipline when using the COMM for official matters; some common phrases and responses are listed as follows:

"Report" - Request for current location and status.

"Acknowledged" - The individual has heard the order or the information passed.

"Test" - Used to determine current channel status and/or the presence of interference. Proper response is rendered numerically, with 'one' being near-incomprehensible and 'five' being loud and clear.

c) Notice Boards - The Servitor is expected to keep track of upcoming events via the order's notice boards. These boards are located on the second floor of the Keep, down the hall from the barracks. The Servitor has permission to make their own additions to the notice board regardless of rank or time in service and is free to do so for matters both personal and professional so long as their dissemination will not work against the good morale and discipline of the order.
