Blanket Fort Expands In Aerie Peak! ((IC, Open))

0

For anyone staying in the keep or the dwarven city below it over furlough, they would've likely noticed a group of Wildhammer kids have started building a growing blanket fort. In it's current state, it's spreading along the edges of streets and through courtyards using borrowed (or "borrowed") pillows, blankets, and even some bits of old furniture.

OOC: This is the start of Something, if that wasn't guessed already. Anyone is free to join in here, too. You can post either just an OOC blurb about what your character's interaction with this is or a full blown story. It'll be something fun to do for the holidays and maybe even a bit after!

Marbelma pays the blankets and sheets slowly taking over Aerie Peak no mind as she navigated the streets of the Wildhammer city.  All the Winter's Veil decorations was putting her in a fouler mood than usual - she hated this holiday.  Bad enough that whatever joy it once gave her had morphed into bitterness, but Rhyliaandra was right - it was an ultimately pointless holiday that served as little more than a distraction and an excuse for drunken revelry.

Her current company wasn't helping.

"So, thinking of what to get that nice Ily girl for Winter's Veil, Marbles?" the draenei shaman asked as he kept pace with the dwarf.

Marbelma scowled.  "I'm not gettin' her anything." she hefted her fiery warhammer over her shoulder.

"Oh, why not?" Roniaar said in a disapproving tone.

"Because Winter's Veil is a stupid holiday?" Marbelma suggested.

"Hmph.  You take too much of my sister's advice to heart." Roniaar said.  Marbelma shook her head.  Roniaar was so different from Rhyliaandra - how were they possibly siblings?  "And even if you do think of Winter's Veil as a dumb holiday, that doesn't necessarily mean that's how Ilyssae thinks that too.  You should get her something - as a token of friendship, if nothing else."

Marbelma just grunted.  "As for myself, I've already entered into the Secret Greatfather Winter gift exchange!"

"You just joined, Roniaar." Marbelma grunted.  "You don't even KNOW these people, and you expect to get presents for them?"

"I intend to try.  It'll be fun!  And after that saucy night in Hearthglen courtesy of the guild, this is the least I can do to repay their kindness." Roniaar replied.  Marbelma shuddered.  Once again, hard to believe that Roniaar and Rhyliaandra were siblings.  "And don't worry, I haven't forgotten about my favorite niece!"

"I'm not your damned niece." Marbelma grunted for what must've been the one hundredth time in ten years.

The pink-haired gnome stopped dead in her tracks and pushed her goggles up onto her forehead, taking in the draping bedsheet archway and the ramshackle city of slouching bedsheet tunnels and tents it led into. Some crafty child had started tacking up jaunty paper stars onto the walls immediately within sight, and somewhere around the next street there came shrieks and a rippling of blankets, presumably from some pillow or chair slipping out of place and letting a section cave in on itself.

With an expression set in steel, Teenan turned on her heels and clipped briskly away. It was some time before she came trotting back, arms weighed down with a dangerously swaying mound of quilts, pillows, cord, rolls of biscuits and even a couple of bedrolls.

Well, somebody had to show these kids how to do it right.

Seda usually did very little around this time of year. Holidays in general weren't quite her strong suit, and she had largely planned to just sit around the workshop working on her incremental machinery improvements. She had gone back and forth to the city below for supply runs intermittently, and had noticed the plush fortifications when they began and then continued to grow. The first time she only spent a few short seconds regarding the construction, but each time she had found herself watching more, until she eventually came to visit when the children were at work.

"You should add more supports to that segment of the wall. It is at risk of collapsing inwards."

"I believe you are overexerting that length of blanket."

"The current position of those fortifications would allow for an enemy unit to flank and overwhelm you in the event of an attack."

The two children on the receiving end of that last one had given her a pair of long, blank stares before adding a toy murloc onto their lone section of pillow-fort.

Eventually Seda broke down and decided to chip in on the effort herself. She brought in blankets and pillows, but the more ambitious side of her quickly determined that there was a need for a more... gnomish flare to this whole event. Mainly, it needed to get mechanized. Seda had worked with siege machinery for years, after all. Which was absolutely relevant, especially when you combined it with the latest gnomish toy designs. Absolutely.

Unlike her usual work creating some slow-moving tonks that could ineffectively plunk pillows out of their barrels wasn't too much of a chore. Making them simulate a gnomish battle-kazoo was a little bit harder, but not impossible. She soon had a few prepared and ready to deliver, donned with some simple toy weaponry and a few Gnomeregan banners to erect.

M as a rule never allowed herself to be seen doing anything kind, thoughtful, or, gods forbid, nice; she had an image to maintain of being remote and hard, definitely someone never to cross or disobey. It was an image she'd fought to earn; most other races looked on gnomes as comedic things and rarely took any seriously. Despite her rank, despite the respect she was given in the unit, M loathed to do anything that could potentially make her look soft outside of rare, friendship related occasions.

Starting a day or so after her return from furlough, odd things started happening around the ever expanding pillow fortress. In the dead of night, a collapsing wall readjusted itself and brought reinforcements to keep it upright. A slumping mattress righted itself a little ways down with the imprint of small hands just barely visible and quickly fluffed out. Another night, blankets from other places of the keep - including blatant thefts from guild bunks - placed themselves near where the expansion of the fort had ended earlier that evening.

Of course, no one was ever seen to be involved with these odd happenings and M made sure none were around to witness blankets move themselves. No one would suspect the generally humorless, emotionally removed Scout Commander was involved in these midnight repairs and resupplies, that much she was sure of.

Zuriah looked upon the rickety forts with a little disdain upon her return. She has been away for a while doing...light knows what and came back to this. Useless constructions. Specially for dwarven children. Would blankets ever really defend them now would they. No. Childish games. Still it was worth contributing to childish illusions. She had illusions once. With a puff of black smoke she disappeared. Nearly an hour later a portal opened by the expanding fort. Behind Zuriah floated a stack of about 600 bricks. She set them down by the fort. Lets see what Dwarven children could really do.

Day 41

Over the last week or so, the childrens’ prized pillow monument has been slowly eroding at the edges as blankets and pillows start to mysteriously disappear, only to turn up freshly washed and stored back properly where they once belonged.

Yesterday the pillow city found itself abruptly deserted, as children began to flee in droves to the shelter of their homes and families. Accounts vary wildly, at times stretching into lurid detail, yet only one thing matches up through all the stories: something scared these kids, badly.

This morning a few of the Wildhammer drudges reported a deep roar booming from somewhere deep in the heart of the pillow fort. They speak of a bone-chilling eerieness about the dark bedsheet corridors.

Have young imaginations been running a little wild, or is there something actually loose in the Keep? Either way, this is going to need a little more than a few well-aimed pillows to get taken care of.

((OOC: Keep an eye on the calendar for event details to update later this evening! Meet up at Wildhammer Keep at 5:30 pm server time.))
